You'd start it with the vi command and the filepath/filename. e.g. vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf Hit the insert key to start inserting text wherever the cursor is (it starts up in a reading mode). Type what you want to do to the file. Hit escape to get out of the editing mode. Then colon w q <enter> to write (w) your changes, and (q) quit the program. e.g. :wq -- [tim@bigblack ~]$ uname -ipr 2.6.22.4-65.fc7 i686 i386 Using FC 4, 5, 6 & 7, plus CentOS 5. Today, it's FC7.
