dam. that didn't help. if i can't figure out something else by friday,
i'll do a fresh install in some spare (backup) partitions, and bring
it up to date....

At least an install on the extra space would give you something for
comparison. If the fresh install fails also, you can assume it is
program level and not corrupted files. (wrong version, incomplete
installed rpm)
