Andy, thanks for mail back
final state of boot is that it gets to the login prompt, where i can enter a
login name but then does not ask for a password !
on the way it stalls at 'starting system logger' which i would guess times
out and proceeds
usbfs seg faults when 'starting /udev' - if that answers your qu. correctly
init scripts as i understand run
Thanks for your help

Andy, thanks for mail back
i think i had but anyways re-run of "fsck -f /dev/hda2" gives no error
indication as completes checks
duly noted on labels etc and i will change back
any other views ?
"no suspend signature" just means you are not coming back out of
hibernation, it is a normal cold boot.
You don't mention what the final state of the boot is. Are you able to
log in despite some brain damage during the boot, or it blows chunks
fatally somewhere? Do the initscripts run? When the mount for usbfs
segfaults, how was that visible to you?
