Now, as to your question - how are you running yum? if you run "yum update" as a normal user, it is not going to work. Yum has to be run as root, because it is changing system files that a normal user does not have read/write permission to. You can change to root by running "su -" and providing the root password. There are also several GUIs that will let you manage the packages on your system. If this is not the problem you are running into, please post the error messages you get when you run "yum update".
