OK, apparently Apple doesn't want users to be able to copy stuff off the device? In this case I've swapped their computer that has their itunes on it with another better box and they would like to extract what they have on the iPods and put it in the "new" computer.Bob Goodwin wrote:I can plug one of the kid's iPods into the usb port and it comes up on the desktop but as soon as I try to "open" or "mount" I get the following message:Unable to mount "Apple iPod Music Player": Given device "/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_part1_size_98574336" is not a volume or driveI believe I installed everything iPod related that showed on yumex including an application called "exaile."If it normally is connected to a machine running itunes, connect it back and look in the setup options. There should be a checkbox for whether it appears as a usb drive or not and you can change it there. What else do I need to do to extract information [music] from it? Or am I trying to do the impossible? That part is impossible with the usual software, even under itunes. There is some 3rd party software around to do that but I don't know if any runs under linux.
There ought to be a way to extract files from the old computer and put them on the new one but I am lost when I have to deal with Windos and generally look for the path of least resistance. They were trying to copy from the iPod and I just continued with that effort ...
As you say there is third party Windows software that will do the job and I think I have found such an app. I know have it copying files to their old computer, a slow process but apparently it works. If it works on this old box I will install the program on their computer and let them have at it.
