This can be done easily in a number of ways on both linux and even on windows. Gtkpod can do this for you, once you get the iPod to mount (which the 4th and 5th generation iPod's I've got have done out of the box with Fedora for several versions). The current gtkpod in Fedora is 0.99.8. I'm looking to update that to 0.99.10 soon for rawhide and then afterward for F7. I only mention that because 0.99.10 auto-detects your iPod(s) while 0.99.8 requires you to point it to the location of your iPod. This should be: /media/IPOD_NAME. Once you've got your iPod listed in gtkpod you can right click on the iPod itself or any album or track on the iPod and choose "Copy Tracks to Filesystem." The dialog that you get from this allows you to specify the path and parameters to use for the naming of the copied tracks. Sorry, I don't have any bright ideas about the error you're getting. Les' suggestion seems worth trying unless someone else has a better solution.
