Unfortunately both of these settings are correct.

[needo@nightcrawler ~]$ set | grep LANG
LANG=en_US.UTF-8

[needo@nightcrawler ~]$ cat /etc/sysconfig/i18n
LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
SYSFONT="latarcyrheb-sun16"
