In the past, and I don't know if it's still the case.  Installing
nvidia's driver, from them, mangled parts of X to suit itself.  How
would that work if you wanted to use another video card, simultaneously
that wanted X without mangling?

Without mangling of what?  Its not clear to me what kind of
configuration & use case you're referencing.  If you want to use two
completely different X drivers with full accleration in both, that
isn't possible, and has nothing to do with nvidia's packaging or
installer.
