Only the same stories you've probably heard. I recall when I was just starting out at KOTA-tv in the 60's, our microwave guides all had reflector stubs below the T's that connected the receiver inputs, and that they were wrapped in heavy foam rubber covers for headache prevention that someone had thoughtfully labeled "microwave catchers". Elmer Nelson, the CE at the time, has forgotten more about microwave setups than I'll ever learn & those stubs were his way of getting another couple of db of signal into the receivers. He built all that stuff, in desperation because then you couldn't buy a rig you could slam the door on for 6 months at a time and forget. So he went through the tube books and came up with a from scratch design that barring a lightning strike on the powerline between the shack and the power pole, could be forgotten for long periods of time. We owned our own system, dual channel both ways as far south as KDUH, dual channel one way the rest of the way to Lookout Mountain in Golden CO at the time, probably still do but I've not talked to Bill Duhamel since well before the 2000' tower at KDUH fell about 5 years back. The last time I did was at the NAB, 15 years back up the log, and he was looking for an engineer at the time. I named my price & he said the one he had then was working for $25k less.
