It would be nice if yum knew what 'top-level' packages you had ever
asked it to install and saved that somewhere so you could repeat it on
the new system after fixing up the repository list. You can get a list
of installed packages from rpm, but that's not quite the same thing
because on a new version the libraries needed to resolve dependencies
may have changed. For example you might have told yum to get vlc and
want to repeat that, but rpm is going to see a dozen other packages and
not know you don't care about them specifically.
