mplayer does play the link just fine once I can figure out how to paste
the url into its requestor, but that brand new, teeny little control panel
it now has, hides the bottom half of it behind the kickstart panel so only
the top half shows up above the clipboard, kwallet, kmix etc icons just to
the left of the clock in the lower right corner of the screen. Kind of
worthless as above when you cannot get at any of its buttons.

Haven't used KDE in centuries but while afaik it usually is not too much
of a hassle to use Gnome apps on a KDE desktop this seems to be a fine
example where it does not work very well together. Hardly fair to blame
gmplayer or KDE for that.

Yes, I've been annoyed with mplayer's habit of drawing the control panel
too far down the screen. The only solution I found was to use a
different skin, one that wasn't as tall.

And just how do you go about actually getting to the skin selector?

If I right click on gmplayer the menu clearly shows "Skin Browser"
Before you do that find, download and install a skin you like from:
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html

Or is this some concerted effort to make us upgrade our FC6 boxes to test3?

Nope.

Have ya tried gmplayer's lil brother, the KDE enabled versions of either kmplayer or (my fave, even under gnome) kplayer? :)
