It should be mentioned that the home directory for root should always be
physically on the computer, not a shared or networked drive.
Occasionally you will want root to work on those other drives without
them being mounted, which cannot happen if the root directory is remote
mounted.
And there are reasons to have it included in the root filesystem in case
you need to boot into single-user mode to fix something that affects
mounting other filesystems. However, if you can boot a CD for rescue
mode, most of the old layout issues become irrelevant.
