I *finally* found someone who solved and noted the solution to my long-standing problem using fglrx drivers with FC6. The solution: take out the vga= option in grub.conf. I had added it to get more characters in the text console, and it caused me to lose the X resolution! Sigh. My system: Dell Inspiron 6400 with 1680x1050 LCD, FC6, up-to-date at the moment.
