You'll probably find that many cameras are made from standard parts (CMOS optical block, common interface ICs, etc.). If a manufacturer is just interested in selling cameras, they don't have to do it through special hardware or drivers. Web cameras *could* be just as generic as USB flash drives, USB hard drives, and whatnot. Most of them do not need special drivers. Manufacturers could build the cameras to a consistent specification, and then all OSs would just use a standard webcam driver, not needing specific ones per manufacturer. And being generic doesn't preclude one manufacturer from making a better camera than their opposition. They can have better optics, different designs, include a decent microphone, etc. Just why is it that having sound with a picture is considered not worth bothering with? It's not just cameras I refer to, but various applications that handle web cam chatting make no provision for doing sound at the same time. I want my futuristic video phone, dammit, it's after the 2000s. -- (This PC runs FC4, my others FC5 & FC6, in case that's important to the thread) Don't send private replies to my address, the mailbox is ignored.
