/etc/init.d/yum-updatesd restart
Stopping yum-updatesd:                                     [FAILED]
Starting yum-updatesd:                                     [  OK  ]
/etc/init.d/yum-updatesd status
yum-updatesd dead but subsys locked

Happens on both my boxen.

I've googled for it but only found a couple of references in July that don't seem to have a resolution...anyone got any ideas?
