What, and get in the way of progress? The gnome setting have been

Just run "yum remove gnome-screensaver". This will revert you to using
the old applicateion, xscreensaver-demo, with all the configurability
you used to have, including the ability to select your image
directory.
And if you don't like it, just run "yum install gnome-screensaver" to
put it back.
New installs need to grab the xscreensaver packages from Extras. But you
are right, you can always put back gnome-screensaver. I'm glad that
extras still carries the program.
