My map is pointing to that gm.map file and it is working here. (see my
previous wrt loading the soundfont)

GM refers to General MIDI which is basically the standard setup.  See:

http://www.midisound.com/techncl.htm for a quick overview.

Also, when on the Hammersound site, do check out anything made by GORT,
nice small soundfonts, collect the entire set today!  :-)
