Planning to install FC6 on Compaq Presario SR2037X-B, do I still need enable_8254_timer?

[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]

As time permits, I hope to install FC6 on a Compaq Presario SR2037X-B.

Currently, to boot 2.6.18-1.2200.fc5, I need to add the following option
to the kernel boot line: enable_8254_timer

[root@rsewill log]# more /boot/grub/grub.conf
# grub.conf generated by anaconda
#
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this
file
# NOTICE: You do not have a /boot partition. This means that
# all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /, eg.
#          root (hd0,2)
#          kernel /boot/vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/sda3
#          initrd /boot/initrd-version.img
#boot=/dev/sda
default=0
timeout=5
splashimage=(hd0,2)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
hiddenmenu
password <...I deliberately excised this password information...>
title Fedora Core (2.6.18-1.2200.fc5)
        root (hd0,2)
        kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-1.2200.fc5 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb
quiet enable_8254_timer
        initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.18-1.2200.fc5.img

The "quiet enable_8254_timer" is on the same line is as the
kernel /boot/vmlinuz...please forgive the email formatting.

I tried booting a DVD written from FC-6-x86_64-DVD.iso to see if this
image was usable.

The image booted far enough for me to hit return selecting the screen
install, but hung shortly thereafter. I'm guessing, if I were to type
"linux debug", I would get more detailed information getting a better
idea where the image is hanging, but I didn't think to try that earlier.

Typing: linux enable_8254_timer
caused the DVD written form FC-6-x86_64-DVD.iso to boot, verify the dvd,
and proceed to the point where it wanted to partition my disk. I
stopped the process at that point because I have not made a backup of my
disk. I need to make a backup before attempting an install. I assume,
since the image got this far, the image would successfully do an
install.

My questions:
1) Is "enable_8254_timer" the correct kernel boot option to use?

2) Should I always have to add this option to the kernel boot options?

I don't know what information may be of help in answering my questions.

Following is some of the information on my Compaq Presario
as seen by 2.6.18-1.2200.fc5
1) uname -a

2) more /proc/cpuinfo

3) more /proc/meminfo

4) df

   My system is set up to dual boot.
   /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2 are used by that other operating system
   when my nephew and his friends wish to play certain games.

5) more /var/log/dmesg (the output of this is quite long)

Suggestions on what I am doing wrong or should be doing are appreciated.

I have not researched what "enable_8254_timer" does. I suspect the boot
image is either selecting the wrong driver for a timer or the correct
driver for a timer has a bug in it.

Beginning of some information on my Compaq Presario...
