Add -x to the #!/bin/bash line in /sbin/start_udev. That will spew tons of info to the console. It might give you some indication where start_udev is hanging.
I'd actually got my mate to do that; it's hanging on udevsettle. I don't know what that's for (I still only have FC5).
Give the list some more info about the computer, motherboard, disk, etc.
