Pirut doesnt have any capability to do updates and certainly not automatic updates. Pup can do updates but not auto updates. You can in Fedora Core 6 configure yum-updatesd to automatically do updates but that feature is not working due to a bug.

Well it may not be doing updates but every once in a while I get a message that there are updates available
and it pretends to do updates.

It *wont* do updates on its own. You have to manually allow that. This is not automatic updates.

 In addition it reports unfound
dependencies.

You report earlier clearly showed Fedora Core 5 packages.

It also I am convinced removed the gnome-session file so
GNOME was no longer available.

There is no details on what happened with gnome-session. So its rather difficult to assume that there is any bug at all.
