First of all, let my correct my type. My entry is /var/lock/LCK..ttyS0.
As for yours, do you even have a /dev/ttyS14, and, if so, is that really
where your modem is connected? If not, try changing your configuration
entry to match the device you are actually using.

My turn for corrections, My entry in modem lights advanced for is
/var/lock/LCK..ttyS1
**
I see the following from /var/log/messages when I get a successful modem
connection:
. . .
Aug 26 17:18:47 didius pppd[15518]: Serial connection established.
Aug 26 17:18:47 didius pppd[15518]: Using interface ppp0
Aug 26 17:18:47 didius pppd[15518]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS1
Aug 26 17:18:48 didius pppd[15518]: PAP authentication succeeded
. . .
But,...thanks to your prompting, I took a really close look at what the
entries were in the "Advanced" tab in preferences. It turns out the
"ppp0" entry for the device had an extra space behind it.
It looks like would expect it too look, now. Thanks for the "nudge".
