Clearly, there is some kind of conflict going on with the 2nd SATA
card. But what exactly?

I have now learned that this appears to be a limitation of the bridge
on the motherboard; it can only handle four SATA drives.

Apparently, if I want more than four SATA drives in my system, I need
either a server-grade motherboard which supports upwards of eight
SATAs, or a high-end Promise SATA controller which has its own bridge.

For the time, being I will have to make do with what I have, but I'd
be interested in hearing from anyone who has experience with these
Promise cards.
