Hi . Use /usr/sbin/alsactl store . One further thing if your using Kde, is to look in Kmix >settings > config Kmix. There is a check box there named "load volumes on startup" or something like that. Uncheck the box, as it interferes with alsactl.
Nigel.

Hmmm, still can't seem to save those settings ;-( and they're the key. IF I ignore system-config-soundcard and run alsa mixer, then unmute the Audigy output, then run xmms, it's all good. I have sound. The second I run the config app, it mutes my sound. So obviously it's not saving the settings?!

If I run the alsactl store 0, alsactl store 1, it still doesn't save and a name like snd-emu10k1, isn't recognised. --help, says card #, but what card number could it be if it's not 0 or 1?

I'm using Gnome, so the KDE thing doesn't apply.... here are the outputs you asked for earlier.....
