RAID5 has some CPU overhead.  RAID1 has next to none with
reasonable hardware where you just issue the write twice and
the controller and DMA does the work in parallel - and reads
are only done once anyway.

Try posting your question on the Linux Raid list linux-raid@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx There are some very knowledgeable people re h/w and s/w raid there.
