There are two ways I know of and have used to make totem play
encumbered file types. In both cases you also need to install the
win32 codecs, which can be downloaded from the mplayer site or
installed from the ATrpms repo (and possibly others, I haven't
looked).

1) Remove the totem package installed by default and is linked with
gstreamer.

2) Install the gstreamer-pitfdll package which enables gstreamer to
use the win32 codecs, as mplayer and xine both do.

I won't disagree at all that shipping totem as the default player for
media it cannot handle isn't the right thing to do. I've not ever had
it installed long enough without enabling the support for various
encumbered codecs to see check what mime-types are in that list nor
whether anyone's opened a bug about it in bugzilla.

It's also not that mysterious to make this stuff work. It comes up
often enough on this list and a little googling will lead one to one
or more of the above methods.
