This is a long shot, but perhaps you need to enable DMA for your DVD drive. /sbin/hdparm /dev/hda |grep dma will tell you if it's enabled - of course you'll need to replace /dev/hda with the device for your DVD player.
DMA is on. I have all but given up on this, and realised that I just may have to reboot for this one. Which sucks because my DVD player in Windows doesn't support 5.1 sound. -- To be updated...
