And MS stole it from Apple, who probably stole it from somewhere else (I'm not sure if the concept of spatial views was in the Xerox PARC GUI's where Apple got a lot of their early ideas for their interface). Google for 'nautilus spatial' for plenty of background discussion and holy wars if that sort of thing interests you. I simply turn that option off and it doesn't bother me on the rare occasions when I use a graphical file manager.
