If you get the choice, I'm told UTF-7 is a better choice for getting
Unicode through mail. Even now, 7-bit data is the only thing you can be
sure of getting through mail systems. Many now handle 8-bit, but not
all.

Thanks! I didn't know there was an issue with 8-bit encoding! I've switched
the default encoding with Firefox to UTF-7 now. Hopefully this mixup won't
happen again!
