I said that I can ping, and that's true, but not by name,
BTW. I use the (static) IP addresses.

What happens then if you try to use the ip instead of the name in the
net use command on the dos box?

MSCLIENT does not support the use of IP addresses.

You can use the hosts file (similar to the lmhosts file) on the dos
box to associate the name of the linux box with its ip. Then you
ought to be be to ping by name.

Probably. I'm not sure what the connection is, though.

Are there any other boxes on the network that you could test against

No.

the linux box? That would help you determine if samba isn't
functioning or configured properly, or if it's the dos box that is in
need of the fixing.

The Linux box cannot even find itself, at the moment. I tried
to use the client side of SAMBA to find the server, and it
failed.

You have found the bank of Larn.
I can explain it for you, but I can't understand it for you.
I speak only for myself, and I am unanimous in that!
