FWIW, I've reported that as
  https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=184075

The only way to turn that auto-save option off cleanly seems to
be manually editing ~/.gconf/apps/gnome-session/options/%gconf.xml .
