Are you sure you can't run at a higher res? I find anti-aliasing makes things worse at low resolution because you can see each pixel individually. Try switching it off. A big difference between Windows-Xp and X-window may be the quality of the installed scalable fonts. It is fiercely difficult to produce quality hinting for true-type fonts (much easier for Type-1). Monotype TimesNewRoman is a very well hinted font and is the default on MSWin. (Maybe Microsoft has claimed "authorship" now.)
