If you want to see what's on a remote desktop (e.g. one you've left running), VNC is one way of doing things. If you just want to run a remote computer, including with GUI, then ssh is good and simple. If you leave a computer doing something, and want to keep tabs on it when you go to another PC, SSH won't allow you to see the desktop like VNC can. -- Don't send private replies to my address, the mailbox is ignored.
