Bash will read ~/.profile if it's a login shell and neither
~/.bash_profile nor ~/.bash_login exist. See the INVOCATION section of
the bash manpage.
and if ~/.bash_profile sources ~/.profile (as I said), then it's
distro-wide. My point.
