My first hint is, as always, avoid a HPQ. There are no ia64 laptops. None of the current PentiumM support 64bit. P4-M also do not support AMD64. That leaves the intel side with nothing but laptops built around desktop cpus. Not a config that I can recommend - too hot to keep on your lap and battery lasts for like an hour. That leaves you with AMD. You got laptops based of the desktop line - again the same issue as above. There is also the Athlon64-M - kinda like the P4-M. The Turion 64 is a pretty good chip. Toms Hardware (at least the german version, the US one should have the translation sometime soon) has tests for it - comparing it to the P-M... Performance and battery life time is pretty much in line with what intel has. The price is much lower though because of amd having to try so hard to penetrate the market. Anyway, long story short - I'd recommend looking for a Turion laptop. If you don't care about battery performance and size, a mobile Athlon64 might be ok. For specific models, you should check out linux-on-laptops.com will have a fairly complete list with installation issues and all. Peter.
