You can open a terminal as that user and run pilot-xfer -L -p /tmp/pilot then press the hotsync button and get a list of files on your palm? If those conditions are true, and you have already verified your device entry in /usr/share/gnome-pilot/devices.xml, then no, I have no other suggestions.
