If one drive has crashed, or is failing in some other way, then that may
influence the working drive causing both drives to go undetected.

I'd try disconnecting the faulty drive (while re-jumpering the working
drive as single) and then try to boot.

Thanks David, it turns out that neither drives are broken, I unplugged both, plugged them back in and everything seems to be working. An fsck was useful though, it fixed a couple errors. (Not that I understand why a sudden switching off can cause the drives to go undetected by the BIOS, but anyway, things work.)
