I did take a look at the hardware browser and the modem does not show up. Not a good sign for the modem I expect.

The built-in modem on my curent laptop doesn't work either. But i have a PCMCIA modem from 3 years ago, which works: IBM Modem FRU: 02K4249. Perhaps you could try looking for something like that. It even says it's cellular-capable, but i haven't tried that aspect of it.
