I have a Dell 2001FP monitor (1600x1200), but I just get a fuzzy 1280x1024 with Fedora Core 4. The higher resolution is on the pick-list in system-config-display, and if I pick it, the xorg.conf line gets Modes including "1600x1200". But, next time X reconstitutes, it doesn't work,* and when I look in Xorg.0.log, I see good news followed by bad: (II) NV(0): Supported Future Video Modes: (II) NV(0): #1: hsize: 1600 vsize 1200 refresh: 60 vid: 16553 ... (II) NV(0): Supported additional Video Mode: (II) NV(0): clock: 162.0 MHz Image Size: 367 x 275 mm (II) NV(0): h_active: 1600 h_sync: 1664 h_sync_end 1856 h_blank_end 2160 h_border: 0 (II) NV(0): v_active: 1200 v_sync: 1201 v_sync_end 1204 v_blanking: 1250 v_border: 0 ... (II) NV(0): Mode "1600x1200" is larger than BIOS programmed panel size of 1280 x 1024. Removing. (II) NV(0): Not using default mode "1600x1200" (unknown reason) [Those last two lines are repeated, appearing a total of 5 times.] What component is issuing this "larger than BIOS programmed panel size" message? How can I explain to Fedora Core 4 that this video board and monitor really, truly can display 1600x1200? (They did, in Windows XP, before I deleted it in favor of Linux.) The video board is "NVidia GeForce 6800" in a "Dell Dimension 8400" using "xorg-x11-6.8.2-37" and the "nv" driver, attached to a "Dell 2001FP (Digital)". * Instead of showing 1600x1200, Fedora Core 4 does something indescribable, which the programmers probably worked hard on, for which I greatly respect them, but really I'd prefer the 1600x1200. It's indescribable, but I'll try: I think FC4 shows a 1280x1024 desktop through a 1280x960 viewport, which I can pan up and down to visit the whole desktop. 1280x960 is the same aspect ratio as 1600x1200, which is such a nice touch that I'm hesitant to complain about it. But I'd really prefer true 1600x1200!
