But your suggestion that I have not done my homework is wide of the mark. Did you actually try this link yourself? When I run it, the first two articles it comes up with are by myself, and have nothing to do with sound at all. (They are contributions to a thread entitled - not by me - "WARNING:DO NOT UPGRADE TO CORE 4", and are an explanation of how I was able to upgrade my Picturebooks to FC-4.) > However, I also did (http://www.google.com/search?&q=%22yamaha+ymf-754% > 22+linux - the fifth link down might help you out a bit > (http://sol4.net/linux/pb-index.shtml) This wasn't the fifth link down for me - that probably depends on one's google settings, or even where one is in the world? However, I had not seen this series of articles on the YMF-754, and it does look as though it may be very useful - thank you for pointing it out. > Also, I'd recommend checking out the Linux Sony Wiki > (http://insue.com/linux/phpwiki/) which seems to be down at the moment > or joining the Linux Sony mailing list > (http://returntonature.com/mailman/listinfo/linux-sony). > > You could also check out this site: > http://www.stevebarr.com/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/barrst/goto.pl?c1vn This is indeed the standard site for the Picturebook under Linux. (I have been one of its most frequent contributors.) Actually, I think Steve Barr has given up the Picturebook himself, as have most owners, since Sony has stopped selling the C1 model to which most devotees were committed. There have been long discussions on the standard C1 mailing list, <c1-forum@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>, about the best subsitute - the Fujitsu Lifebook being the popular winner, I think. > It seems to have a lot of Sony-specific information... Unfortunately, there does not seem much overlap between different Sony machines, as far as Linux is concerned. I used to subscribe to the Linux Sony list, but didn't find it useful. > A little research goes a long way... I would recommend a nicer tone > when posting to the list in the future... As I said before, if you don't like rants then don't read articles with the word "rant" in their title. Surely you don't read all the articles on the Fedora list? Again, although I am grateful for your advice, I was not really asking about sound on my C1's, I was really trying to draw attention to the gravely deficient machinery for configuring sound under Fedora. I would like to see Fedora much more popular, and one of its great weaknesses, as I see it, is the poor quality of the Fedora wizards. (A future rant, which you should take care to miss, will concern the Printing wizards.) . -- Timothy Murphy e-mail (<80k only): tim /at/ birdsnest.maths.tcd.ie tel: +353-86-2336090, +353-1-2842366 s-mail: School of Mathematics, Trinity College, Dublin 2, Ireland
