I have a gigabit ethernet switch from netlink and it is working like a charm. It is an unmanaged switch and that will do just fine for what you have in mind. I picked mine up at ebay for 20€ IIRC, new price is about 70€ As for the cards, I have one broadcom netxtreme bcm5751 gigabit ethernet controller, drivers provided by kernel. And, one Dlink gigabit ethernet controller DGE-528T which works very well as well, but you will need at least the kernel 2.6.11-1.14 before it is built in. This one I bought for 15€ new somewhere in germany because for some reason they are still very hard to find in France, which is where I live.
