In FC4 entering root password does work.
 
However, I tried all methods listed and I do not know the command to get out of the virtual consol.  I had to issue the reboot command.

I just tried (FC2) and that does not work here.

CTRL-ALT-F2 might be better, since on some computers (apparently
according to some posts here earlier) CTRL-ALT-F1 turns some
computers OFF.
