I have done this on the remote client: export DISPLAY=x.x.x.x:0.0 (x.x.x.x is my desktop, X is not listening on port 6000) then I run thunderbird and I get: thunderbird -vvvvv (thunderbird-bin:24316): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: I have repeated the same but without exxport DISPLAY and that does not work, because thunderbird thinks its trying to connect to the remote client X, which isn't running.
