It's not as fast as on my faster desktop machines, but it is fast enough for anything I do except compiling software (and it would be fast enough for that if I was patient - it's faster than the machine I originally compiled an LFS system on) I don't know what your specs are. If you have a really old machine, I suggest you look at the RULE project - google for RULE Linux. There are other window managers / desktop environments that are more lightweight than GNOME - but try it and see if it is fast enough for what you do.
