On my 700MHz Thinkpad T20 with 256 MB of RAM and a 4200RPM hard drive,
GNOME runs fast enough. It's not as fast as on my faster desktop
machines, but it is fast enough for anything I do except compiling
software (and it would be fast enough for that if I was patient - it's
faster than the machine I originally compiled an LFS system on)

I don't know what your specs are. If you have a really old machine, I
suggest you look at the RULE project - google for RULE Linux.

There are other window managers / desktop environments that are more
lightweight than GNOME - but try it and see if it is fast enough for
what you do.
