Yes, there are steps you can take to mitigate the issue, but the end result is that it still exists and requires workarounds.. Of course, as the problem originally existed, if you booted the machine and waited a couple of minutes (i.e. got a cup of coffee, finished putting your stuff away, etc), you never noticed, but if you sat and waited for the login to appear and quickly logged in (and your machine was a bit slower, 500mhz anyone), you got bit.. On the faster machines (not using dhcp, etc, etc, etc), the problem is not as noticeable. The end result, is that on a 500mhz machine, the synchronous boot of linux, is much more efficient than windows. tom
