hwconf comes from kudzu. Try changing the driver: e100 to driver: e1000 or driver = unknown. To me it seems that the module gets loaded before /etc/modprobe.conf is reached at boot time. Did you try configuring the NIC using kudzu or something else e.g. system-config-network*?
But, if I do a manual modprobe e1000 (with no other driver loaded) then my card doesn't work. Is it wise to do this then?
I can't remember doing anything to my network card, so I suppose the Fedora install has configured it. It worked right away after install AFAIK.
