Check /etc/modprobe.conf, and change

That doesn't work. It leaves me with both eepro100 and e100 drivers, which makes it all worse...
in /etc/modprobe.conf replace e100 or eepro100 with e1000, that's the modules I am running here without any problems.
apprich@elmstreet apprich $ cat /etc/modprobe.conf | grep eth0 alias eth0 e1000
Also, what NIC do you have? Could you give us the output of lspci run by root?
Thanks for your reply,
