Ok, two people suggesting, I tried it again. The system keeps loading
two modules: e100 and (eepro100 or e1000).
The e1000 driver doesn't work at all with my card.
pls, post your comlete /etc/modprobe.conf. Could you also try
find /etc/ -type f | grep -i eepro100
find /boot/ -type f | grep -i eepro100

It's a Toshiba Satellite pro 4600 laptop. The card is an intel
etherexpress 100.
I also just have a eepro100 card but it's running like a charme w/
the e1000 module.
