Okay, it will lack a *graphical*, full-featured newsreader ... :-) > Seriously, Thunderbird will suffice for the few seconds it takes anybody > to type "yum install pan". I don't want to make a big deal out of this. It's just that "yum install pan" is so hard to discover for a new user. First they have to know about yum, then they also have to know about Fedora Extras, and then they have to know that they need pan. Most new users will probably attempt to use either Evolution or Thunderbird for newsreading, and be dismayed that they can't access binary newsgroups and experience all kinds of random problems (last time I tried out Thunderbird for newsreading it crashed). People who are not otherwise particularly computer-savvy do use newsgroups -- just look at the various newsgroups about TV shows, movies, politics, and the binary newsgroups on photography and graphic art (it's not all pr0n and illegally copied software, music, movies etc).
