Everytime I update my Linux as a gnome user I tend to whack all the .gnome* and .gconf* dirs and start my gnome-settings from scratch which yes I know don't throw anything at me is a pain.
I've raised a bugzilla report for this (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/beta/show_bug.cgi?id=147937); I'm fairly certain that all of the problems stem from gconf2 returning duff data (when it's defaults from the schemas, NOT from my amended settings, which, once set, seem to be OK); it means that a lot of stuff is borked for even new users.
For some reason gconf2's gconf_client_get is returning the fact that there's something there, but the type & value are unset which a lot of apps. don't like (e.g., my (& new user's) metacity has no keybindings unless I add them back into my own settings. More details in bugzilla.
I've 'rpm -q --verify'd all gnome/gcnof/metacity I can see & nothing's reporting as bad :-(
