Sounds like the display isn't set up properly. Have her boot in to run level 3Ok thanks.......but isn't that utility a Python/GUI utility which would require X to be running?
by appending a 3 to the kernel on the bootup. From level 3 she will be able to
run system-config-display to set up her display.
You can start the install in text mode and do the whole thing without X. Type:
linux text
at the installer start.
